Discussion on libraries and the digital environment

Writer: Anton GrishinAnton Grishin

Recently I participated in the discussion “Libraries VS Digital Media Environment. Space, books, reading”. The event was held at the Central Youth Library №122 named after A. Grin, which is located in Moscow’s Lefortovo district. I haven't been to this library before, and it impresses with its cool spaces for such meetings and modern reading rooms. I'm probably behind the times, but I've never seen buffets with a real coffee machine and a real barista in city libraries before.

дискуссии «Библиотеки VS Цифровая медиа-среда. Пространство, книги, чтение»

Colleague librarians discussed how they work in the new digital world and what opportunities it gives them. I talked about what modern book formats in book services look like and what is good about them, using Stroki as an example. Among other things, I talked about the fact that we don't have any special e-readers or audiobook listeners, they are the same readers as everywhere else, who are now comfortable with this particular book format. And our service does not plan to tear readers away from paper books, but on the contrary, wants to make friends with these formats. For this purpose we have a convenient tool to switch from paper to e-book (and the reader can easily find the way back). I also told about the possibilities of Stroki’s reader, animated books, live covers. Readers of electrobooks.media already know everything about it, but the library audience, it seemed to me, it was all new and interesting.

It was a good event and the coffee was good.
