It's hot in Peredelkino

“The Great Book Discussion” in Peredelkino

Contrary to the “Stuffy” festival organizers' instructions, the first part of “The Great Book Discussion” turned out to be not stuffy, but hot. There were theses about the need for a special selection of self-published books, about the unnecessary audiobooks, and also about the fact that children's books will go into electronic format in the last place. I wanted to argue with all this, which I did for an hour and a half under the merciless Peredelkino sun. And besides arguments, I shared these thoughts:

  • those people who read books now prefer printed books, but e-books have a significant share of the market, and they need to be developed;

  • while we still control neural networks and not them us, we need to use them as a tool to improve and reduce the cost of book production;

  • neural networks are a technical tool, and they should be given technical tasks, for example, to create code for e-books (but not the texts themselves);

  • the catalog of audiobooks in Russia we still have to grow and grow, and the format itself helps to attract a whole new audience to books, which is unlikely to get to reading a printed or electronic version.

Thanks to the organizers of “Stuffy” for a great festival and special thanks to Stroki's editors Olga and Maria for coming to support me at this heated (whether it turned out great or not is not for me to decide, of course) discussion!
